Welcome to the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology!
The Department is in an exciting phase of growth and expansion that is building upon the efforts and reputations of our nationally and internationally recognized faculty. Our research mission incorporates molecular, cellular, and systems pharmacology and toxicology approaches, and cuts across the boundaries of traditional departments and disciplines. Our funded research in sensory function and pain, pathogen infection, neurodegeneration, ion channels, cancer biology, and drug abuse comprise just a few of our interests. We employ cutting edge technologies and focus on solving fundamentally important problems pertinent to diseases and disease processes that can be translated feasibly to clinical issues. We work towards a synergistic interaction between the clinical and basic sciences that prompts unexpected discoveries of causes and novel treatments for disease.
The teaching mission of our Department uses innovative methods to effectively communicate the current state of knowledge in pharmacology and toxicology to the medical, graduate, and post-graduate students of the University. We are nationally known for using the most current technologies to teach pharmacology and toxicology to medical and graduate students. We teach critical thinking and problem solving skills, and we also provide opportunities for the students to excel in the laboratory and develop as life-long learners. Faculty participate in our Graduate Program (http://pharmtox.iusm.iu.edu/grad-program/) which awards Ph.D. and M.S. (on a limited basis) degrees in Pharmacology or Toxicology. We also train students towards the M.D./Ph.D. degree.
Leadership service is also a focus of the Department’s efforts. Our faculty routinely and proudly provide service to national and international scientific committees and organizations. Efforts are underway for strengthening and promoting pharmacology across the University and the surrounding communities in Indiana by enhancing the understanding and appreciation of pharmacology and toxicology through educational and research opportunities.
In general, the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology emphasizes excellence and innovation and provides an atmosphere where faculty, students, and staff contribute cohesively in a collegial, supportive, and dynamic environment.
Welcome to our website and we hope to share our excitement with you!
